Why to install rooftop solar plant in Chandigarh

Updated: Aug 24, 2021

When in Chandigarh it is very hard to miss those solar panels installed on multiple rooftops on houses. As Chandigarh has majorly bungalows for residents it’s very easy to view them. There are various reasons for the good residents of Chandigarh to install solar but the primary source of such an awareness level in the city is that the UT government has made it compulsory for the buildings to adopt solar energy. Reasons for adapting solar in Chandigarh are listed below.

1) The mandate:

The Chandigarh Administration Gazette issued a order that solar rooftop plant is compulsory for all commercial, educational, government, hospital and residential buildings as per the plot size. For a residential building of plot size 500 sq. yd to 1000 sq. yd its 1kW, till 3000sq. yd is 2kW and above 3000 sq. yd is 3kW. Government buildings the size has to be at-least 2kW or 5% of connected load. For hospitals and hotels in Chandigarh it depends on the connected load but a minimum of 10kW. As Chandigarh is a very small Union Territory, it relies on the electricity from surrounding states and rooftop solar plants add to ease the huge electricity import costs.

2) Save electricity bills:

The electricity tariff rates in Chandigarh start from Rs2.75 per unit (kWhr) to Rs5.20 per unit for units consumed from first 150 units to above of 500 units. When you install a rooftop solar plant on your property, all the units generated by the solar rooftop plant are free for you. For example, if your monthly average consumption is 500 units and your solar rooftop plant generates 300 units, you only have to pay for the remaining 200 units. Additionally, you pay on the lower tariff slab as the lower units you take in from the grid the cheaper they are !

3) Save the environment:

Fortunately, the rooftop solar panels rely only on the sunlight from the mighty sun to generate electricity. This results in whenever you use the energy from rooftop solar plant you save on the tons of carbon-di-oxide which would had been released if the energy would had been generated from a conventional coal or fossil fuel plant. Fossil fuel plants additionally contribute to the pollution in rivers and not to mention the high levels of noise pollution in the surrounding area of the plant.

Step 1:

Consult with multiple Solar solutions providers in your area. They will educate you on the size of the plant you require considering the mandate from government and the optimal size as per your electricity consumption. They will also let you know the amount of subsidy that you can claim from the government though you should know the real value of opting for a subsidised plant. When investing in solar rooftop plant, consider it like a investment you do in any other sources and choose quality over cheap cost.

Step 2:

Once you confirm the rooftop solar installing company and the make of components to be used, some permissions are taken from the DISCOM as your electricity meter would have to be replaced by a net meter. Net-meter unlike the normal bi-directional one can measure energy coming in and going out from the solar plant, you can learn more here.

Step 3:

Once the plant is setup and installed, the government officials will do a site visit to ensure it is setup as it should be. After the formalities are done, the electric meter is changed and the plant is turned on!
