Tata Nexon EV and Tigor EV continue to dominate the electric vehicle sales statistics.
Electric car sales in India have been gradually increasing. According to figures from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, the passenger electric vehicle segment sold 2,352 units in February 2022, up 58 percent from January and a whopping 297 percent over last year (FADA). And, while the market is still in its infancy, Tata Motors maintains a commanding lead, accounting for 2,264 of the total 2,352 electric vehicle sales with either the Nexon EV or Tigor EV.
Tata Motors sold 2,264 Nexon EV and Tigor EV vehicles in February 2022. Tata sold 1,360 units in January, a 66 percent increase over the previous month. Tata sold 434 Nexon EVs in February 2021, a 422 percent year-over-year increase, albeit these figures are for the Nexon EV alone.
Their success is due to the scarcity of competitors at that pricing point, which provides them with an unmatched advantage. Nexon EV and Tigor EV are the only electric automobiles in the Rs 10 lakh-20 lakh pricing bracket.
EV adoption has also been encouraged significantly by a number of state incentives and regulations, most notably in Maharashtra, where EV sales increased by 157 percent following the implementation of the state's EV policy. The Tigor EV's price has been reduced by up to Rs 2.30 lakh as a result of many perks, including an early bird scheme. Meanwhile, select Nexon EV models are eligible for up to Rs 2.50 lakh in incentives.
That again, it's worth noting that Tata's EV sales are likely not yet reaching their full potential, as the automotive industry continues to struggle with the chip crisis. Tata has disclosed that its electric vehicles face up to six-month wait times, affecting monthly retail sales data.
MG Motor is the second largest seller of electric vehicles in the world.
Tata's market dominance becomes more apparent when compared to the few other automakers currently selling EVs in India. The MG ZS EV is the market's second-most popular electric vehicle, yet it only sold 38 units in February 2022.
This is, however, prior to the introduction of the facelifted ZS EV earlier this week. This suggests that MG's EV sales in February 2022 were entirely comprised of pre-facelift ZS EV stock. MG experienced a 36% reduction in January 2022, with 59 units sold, while a 70% decline in February 2021, with 127 units sold.
Meanwhile, the Mahindra eVerito sold 12 units last month, representing a 20% year-over-year increase, however growth was negative 61% when compared to January 2022. Mahindra has been in the electric vehicle field longer than others, with models such as the E2O, but they are now behind the curve with no new vehicles, particularly in compared to Tata Motors.
Having said that, Mahindra will shortly debut an entirely new line-up of EVs in July, with three new concepts dubbed the 'Born Electric Vision.' These concepts will serve as the basis for future vehicles such as the XUV900 coupe and an electric XUV700.
Meanwhile, Hyundai sold seven Kona Electrics in February, the same number as the prior month in January. However, revenues were down 59% year over year. In India, the Hyundai Kona Electric is also getting a big redesign later this year.
BYD also recently began operations in India, selling ten e6 vehicles, identical to what they did in January 2022. The BYD e6, on the other hand, is offered only to fleet operators.
India's EV market is expected to grow at a rapid pace.
Apart from Tata Motors, Mahindra, and a few others, the majority of automakers in India have failed to develop a clear business model for electric vehicles. Tata Motors has ambitious plans to introduce up to eight new electric vehicles in India by 2025, while Mahindra has also developed a detailed EV business plan dubbed the 'Born Electric Vision'. MG has revealed intentions to introduce a slew of new EVs in India, the first of which would be a compact two-door city car in early 2023, as part of a newly formed EV business.
Meanwhile, Maruti's first electric vehicle for India, which will be built in collaboration with Toyota, will not arrive until 2025. Other big mass-market players, such as Hyundai and Kia, will follow suit first, with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 scheduled to debut in India this year. Volkswagen and Skoda are also considering bringing the ID.4 and Enyaq iV to the United States as complete imports, potentially next year. All of these vehicles, however, will maintain a premium place in the market, with mass-market variants arriving considerably later. Honda, too, has yet to identify an India-specific electric vehicle business strategy.
Which electric SUV should you buy in 2022: the MG ZS EV or the Tata Nexon EV?
Environmental concerns and a global push for cleaner mobility have resulted in an increase in the share of electric automobiles in India in recent years. While the share of all-electric vehicles is still small in comparison to conventional petrol and diesel vehicles, the EV category in India is growing at a rapid pace. And this is due to the introduction of EVs by mass-market manufacturers such as Tata Motors, MG, and Hyundai. Tata is now the market leader in India's electric vehicle area with the Nexon EV and Tigor EV. However, MG is aggressively pursuing a larger portion of the Indian EV market, which has prompted the business to offer the 2022 ZS EV. The ZS EV, which was launched a few days ago, now includes a revamped design, enhanced modern amenities, and a larger battery pack that provides a longer riding range.
However, can this new ZS EV complicate matters for Tata Nexon EV in India? Let us attempt to ascertain this.
The 2022 MG ZS EV measures 4,323 mm in length, 1,809 mm in width, and 1,649 mm in height, with a 2,581 mm wheelbase. Tata Nexon EV, on the other hand, measures 3,994 mm in length, 1,811 mm in width, and 1,607 mm in height, with a 2,498 mm wheelbase.
The 2022 MG ZE EV is equipped with a 10.1-inch touchscreen with smartphone connectivity, a fully digital instrument cluster, automatic air conditioning, a panoramic sunroof, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, a digital Bluetooth key that enables starting and unlocking the car via a smartphone, steering-mounted controls, keyless entry, push-button start/stop, rear AC vents, three driving modes, cruise control, and a voice recognition system capable of The ZS EV now includes the latest i-Smart interface, which enables over 75 connected car features, such as air conditioner management, live location sharing, and emergency call.
Apart from these, the 2022 ZS EV includes in-car services and subscriptions from partners like as Jio Saavn for music, Park+ for pre-booking parking spaces, and MapMyIndia for live traffic updates with 4D maps.
