Qatar's First Solar Plant to Use LONGi's Bifacial Modules 800 Megawatts

Located 10 kilometres west of Doha, the Al-Kharsaa project is Qatar's first solar power plant, with a total planned capacity of 800 megawatts. The project will be equipped with bifacial modules and a tracking system from Chinese firm LONGi.

According to the business, this will be the world's largest solar plant to incorporate both bifacial modules and a tracking system. According to LONGi, the following attributes distinguish its Hi-MO 4 bifacial modules:

Due to the low operating current of half-cut cells, they provide more power and a lower hot spot temperature.

By utilising an M6 standard wafer A portion of the assembly line has been upgraded to 9BB, resulting in increased power.

Unusual parallel connection design results in increased energy output when shade or non-uniform radiation is present.

Maximum static loading on front/back sides 5400/2400Pa, appropriate for tracker

Split junction box, 300mm cable length (can be Customized)

Mounting holes spaced 400mm apart have been added to correspond with the horizontal single axis tracker.

Supporting 1500V system with glass and junction box

Encapsulation using 2*2mm glass

Cell efficiency >22%, anti-LID, anti-PID, and first-year deterioration of 2%

A short frame without a C side can help minimise the shading created by the frame.

Sustainability has been central to Qatar's bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup from the start, and if completely connected to the grid later this year, the Al-Kharsaa solar facility will generate enough electricity to meet 10% of the country's peak demand, according to LONGi.

The project is part of Qatar's energy sector's efforts to meet its promise to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and expand investment in clean energy in order to meet the country's 'National Vision 2030' goals.

"As a world leader in solar technology, LONGi's mission is to provide environmentally friendly and resource-efficient photovoltaic (PV) power station solutions that contribute to the Middle East's and the world's synchronised economic and environmental development," LONGi stated.

A bit about the company:

LONGI Silicon Materials is a manufacturer, distributor, and researcher of monocrystalline ingots. It is the world's largest manufacturer of monocrystalline silicon and has smashed world solar efficiency records three times in the last five months. Fast Company named Xi'an LONGi Silicon Materials one of the "Most Innovative Companies 2013" "for its low-cost supply of high-quality silicon wafers to the solar industry." LONGi Solar, a subsidiary of LONGI Green Energy Technology, recently set a new industry record for conversion efficiency at 23.6 percent using its P-type monocrystalline PERC (passivated emitter rear cell) solar cells, which are being used by an increasing number of manufacturers globally. The procedure begins with a silicon wafer that is typically 1 to 2 mm thick. A multitude of parallel, transverse slices are made across the wafer, resulting in a huge number of slivers with a thickness of 50 micrometres and a breadth equal to the original wafer's thickness. These slices are rotated 90 degrees, such that the surfaces that correspond to the original wafer's faces become the slivers' edges. As a result, a 150 mm diameter, 2 mm thick wafer with an exposed silicon surface area of approximately 175 cm2 per side is converted into approximately 1000 slivers with dimensions of 100 mm 2 mm 0.1 mm, providing a total exposed silicon surface area of approximately 2000 cm2 per side. As a result of this rotation, the electrical doping and contacts that were previously positioned on the face of the wafer are now located at the sliver's edges, rather than at the front and rear, as with traditional wafer cells. As a result, the cell becomes responsive on both sides, from both the front and back (a property known as bifaciality). Such results must be certified by a reputable and trusted external body, and this achievement has been reviewed and certified by China's National Center for Supervision and Inspection on the Quality of Solar Photovoltaic Products (CPVT).
