Oldest Solar PV System tech on display in Netherlands

A solar panel on display at a science museum in the Netherlands is one of 2,748 modules used in the country's first photovoltaic (PV) system. The module has a power output of 18W and an efficiency of around 9%. AEG-Telefunken of Germany manufactured it in 1982.

Museon-Omniversum, a science and culture museum in The Hague, Netherlands, is currently displaying a solar module used in the country's first PV system – an 18W panel manufactured in 1982 by Germany-based AEG-Telefunken.

"Museon-Omniversum is a museum about important global issues, with a current focus on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals," a museum spokesperson told pv magazine. "Right now, we're putting together an exhibition called 'One Planet Now.'" The solar panels will be displayed as a historical experiment toward a more sustainable world in a section of this exhibition with the theme "sustainable living."

The PQ/10/20/01 polycrystalline module is 45.8 cm 56.4 cm 1 cm in size and is made up of 20 series-connected solar cells. It has a power conversion efficiency of around 9%, a 9V open-circuit voltage, and a 2A short-circuit current.

The product is one of 2,748 panels used to construct a 50kW PV system linked to 18kWh of battery storage and a 40kW wind turbine at the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz (MIWB) in Terschelling, an island in the West Frisian Islands archipelago in the northern Netherlands.

The project was one of 17 European solar-related pilot projects co-funded by the European Commission between 1979 and 1993. The system was completed in 1983 by the Dutch engineering firm Holec Projects, with assistance from the local consultancy Ecofys.

According to the paper "Solar-Wind Project Terschelling," published in Photovoltaic Power Generation in 1983, the grid-tied project was created to investigate the interaction with the local network and to ensure completely reliable energy delivery to consumers while increasing the system's use-factor.
