MEDA is a Maharashtra government institute run in collaboration with the Federal Government of India to regulate energy conservation and promote the development of renewable energy in Maharashtra State, including solar energy, bio-energy, and wind energy. MEDA operates as a State Nodal Agency (SNA) under the auspices of the State of Maharashtra's Energy Department. MEDA also serves as a State Designated Agency (SDA) for the Bureau of Energy Efficiency's implementation (BEE).

•In 1985, it was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and the Bombay Public Trust, 1950. (in 1987)

•Under the purview of MNRE, the GoI

•Assistance to state and federal governments in promoting and developing new and renewable energy and technologies, as well as promoting and implementing energy conservation.

•Serving as the State Nodal Agency for Renewable Energy and the State Designated Agency for Energy Conservation.

•Determined to explore clean and eco-friendly resources such as solar, wind, bagasse power generation, hydro, biomass, geothermal, and wave.

The Ministry of Power, the Government of India, and the State of Maharashtra MEDA also serves as a State Designated Agency (SDA) for the implementation of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, under the supervision of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, Government of India and Government of Maharashtra.

Want to install solar rooftop? Read on till the end and provide us with your details for the same. You can head on to Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) website (www.mahaurja.com) or BigWit Energy website (www.bigwitenergy.com) to learn more.

As of 31 March 2016, Maharashtra had 6959.76 MW of installed renewable energy capacity (Wind-4661.91 MW, Small Hydro-284.30 MW, Bagasse-based co-generation-1414.75 MW, Biomass Power- 200 MW, MSW & liquid Waste- 3 MW, Industrial Waste- 33.55 MW, Solar Power- 362.25 MW) and maintained its second position in the country. Given the significant importance of electricity production from new and renewable sources, the MNRE has set a target of having installed 175 GW of RE electricity generation infrastructure in India by 2022. In line with this, the State has recently declared comprehensive RE policies to promote grid-connected and off-grid renewable energy projects.

Total capacity of 14,400 MW is targeted through grid-connected projects and rooftop solar projects, and various targets have been set for the installation of off-grid renewable power projects in the state over the next 05 years, or by 2020. These steps will undoubtedly make a greater contribution of renewable energy to the electricity basket.

MEDA's wind monitoring project, the largest in the country, is still ongoing, with 409 wind monitoring sites installed by March 2016. MEDA has also launched the state's solar resource assessment programme. We are the first state in the country to establish its own Solar Radiation Resource Assessment Stations (SRRA). SRRA will produce accurate, investment-grade solar radiation data. In total, 15 SRRA stations have been established in the state.

Along with grid-connected RE power generation, Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) Solar Energy department has already been promoting the off-grid RE sector. The solar thermal programme has made significant progress, with 12.24 lakh sq.m. of solar collector area of solar water heating systems installed to date. Another ambitious programme that has been implemented is a common solar study room at the gramme panchayat level. So far, more than 18603 gramme panchayats have received solar home lighting systems, which are tried to install at community locations and allow students to study at night. It is also worth noting that the state had also installed the most wind-solar hybrid systems, with a total capacity of 2074.04 kW, up only until fiscal year 2015-16.

MEDA (Maharashtra Energy Development Agency) also serves as the State Designated Agency for energy conservation and efficiency initiatives in the state. Energy conservation activities are promoted through various state budget schemes, including the installation of energy efficient street lights. Over 138456 street lights in various gramme panchayats have been replaced with CFLs to date. MEDA's two major schemes, which provide financial assistance for energy efficiency development initiatives in government buildings and urban local governments, have received a positive response. Schemes for energy auditing have also gained traction. These courses initiated and strengthened the approach to energy audit procedures in industry and government.
