Households free to install rooftop solar panel by any vendor under govt scheme: MNRE

Previously, under the rooftop solar programme, homeowners were needed to obtain it exclusively from the specified vendors in order to receive the benefits and subsidy under the scheme.
On Friday, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy stated that households are free to install rooftop solar panels themselves or by any vendor of their choice, and that a photograph of the installed system for distribution utility is sufficient to receive benefits or subsidies under the government scheme.
According to a ministry release, the decision to streamline the rooftop solar programme was made at a review meeting convened by Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy R K Singh on January 19, 2022.
According to the statement, following the review, the minister issued directives for simplifying the Roof Top Scheme so that individuals can readily use it.
He has directed that no family would be required to have a rooftop solar panel installed by any of the named providers in the future.
The homeowners may either install the rooftop solar panel themselves or have it installed by any vendor of their choice, and then notify the distribution company of the installation, along with an image of the system that has been built, according to the statement.
The notification to the Discom of the installation of the rooftop solar panel can be given in the material form via a letter / application or on the designated website, which has been set up by each Discom and the national government for the Roof Top Scheme.
The distribution firm will ensure that net metering is provided within 15 days of receiving the information.
The government subsidy, which is 40% for rooftops with up to 3 KW capacity and 20% for rooftops with capacities of up to 10 KW, will be credited to the householder's account by the Discom within 30 days of installation.
To ensure that the quality of the solar panel and inverter meets the prescribed standard, the central government will publish from time to time lists of solar panel and inverter manufacturers whose products meet the expected quality standards, as well as price lists; and the householder can choose the solar panels and inverter of his choice.
The option of having the rooftop solar panel installed by any of the Discom-approved vendors remains accessible.
According to the statement, in such instances, the householder may choose the solar panel and inverter of his choosing.
