10 Best Ways to Reduce Air Pollution
Updated: Oct 15, 2022
Lets’s discuss these 10 best ways to reduce air pollution.
1. Using public transports
Using public transport in our daily commute is a sure short and the simplest way of contributing to reducing air pollution as it provides with less gas and energy. Even carpooling with colleagues contribute to it. In addition to less release of fuels and gas, using a public transport can also help in saving money.
This further helps in decongestion of road traffic which further reduces the emission per vehicle.
2. Turn off the lights when not in use
Though renewable energy is being rapidly adapted by people all over the world, primary source of energy is still conventional means. All the conventional means of energy production release air pollution as their byproduct and consume a lot of water during operation. The energy that the lights our homes and offices take also contribute to air pollution, thus less consumption of electricity can save energy. Use energy saving LED lights to help the environment.
Using natural light fillers on roofs and walls can drastically reduce the electricity consumption.
3. Recycle and Reuse
The concept of recycle and reuse is not just to conserve resources and then use them judicially but also is helpful for air pollution as it helps in reducing pollution emissions. The recycled products also take less power to make other useful products from them.
4. No to plastic bags
The widespread use of plastic products could be extremely harmful to the environment as they take a very long time to decompose, due to their material made up of oil. The use of paper bags instead is a better alternative as they decompose easily and are recyclable. The oceans on earth are being used as fills for all the one time use plastics which has extreme consequences on human life. About 100 Million tons of plastic is generated every year and approximately 10% of it (About 13 Million tons yearly estimated by UN), resulting in reduction of marine life population and entering the human food chain. The floating plastic is responsible for deaths of about 1 Million sea birds and about 1Lac marine mammals every year as due to their shiny nature, they attract these animals. Predictions say that even if we keep on disposing waste into marine at the same rate, plastic in the oceans will outweigh fish by 2050 !
Using paper bags instead of plastic, can help reduce this drastically.
5. Reduction of forest fires and smoking
The collecting of garbage and getting it on fire in dry seasons or dry leaves catching fires is a huge factor for causing air pollution. The Australia’s Black Summer Fire is a classic example of it. Australia’s 2019-20 Summer Bushfire which is also known as Black Summer has ended on 31st March 2020. According to some meteorologists the below average rainfall, low relative humidity and the strong winds had caused the forest to burn. Although Australia has suffered several bushfires, this season has been one of the worst. According to NASA the bushfire has pumped 350 million tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere and due to this the AQI has dropped to hazardous levels. The hazardous bushfire smoke has intermittently blanketed the heavily populated areas like Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.
The wildfire produced fine particles in the air, which was a direct threat to human health. Inhalation of such polluted air causes respiratory problems such as reduced lung function, exacerbated asthma and premature death.
Smoking also causes air pollution and causes the air quality to worsen along with obviously damaging one’s health.
6. Use of fans / coolers instead of Air Conditioner
The usage of AC’s takes a lot of energy and emits a lot of heat in the enviorment through the process which is harmful for the environment. AC’s also take a lot of power and energy to work as compared to fans or coolers and as mentioned in point 2, more energy consumption leads to more indirect air pollution.
7. Use filters for chimneys
The gas that is emitted from fireplaces in homes and factories are extremely dangerous for air pollution and harms the air quality severely. The use of filters should be used at least if the consumption couldn’t be lessened, this will help to reduce the effect of harmful gases absorbing in the air.
8. Avoid usage of crackers
The use of crackers during festivals and weddings is sadly one of the biggest contributors to air pollution, leading to a layer of smog which is extremely harmful for health. So, practice of no crackers should be implemented.
9. Avoid using of products with chemicals
Products that use the chemicals in their usage or smell strongly, like paints or perfumes should be used less or outside the house. There can also be an alternative to use products with low chemical content and organic properties.
10. Implement Afforestation
Last but not the least, plant and grow as many trees as possible. We have only one plant to live on and trees make our life possible here. Sadly, humans have been continually deforesting the earth at a alarming rate which might leave the plant unhabitable for our future generations. The practice of planting trees provides a lot of benefits to the environment and helps with the release of oxygen.
We should take a oath of planting at-least 10 trees every year per family!
Installing solar rooftop plants also help in reducing air pollution by preventing the indirect release of air pollution generated in conventional energy production units.
